Pedal2Africa - 24 Hour Cycling Event
Three Grainger employees took part in a 24 hour cycling event in October to raise money for Save the Children and the Maasai Heritage Preservation Foundation.
Pedal2Africa challenged itself to cover the distance from Edinburgh to Africa in non-stop pedaling in one 24-hour hour period. Grainger's Dan Snelling, Gary Hunter and Richard Hadley contributed over 100 km, between them, in one hour of cycling. Richard Hadley said: “I think we did outstandingly well to get over the 100K mark!”
The event, run from the Scottish Widows headquarters in Edinburgh, included colleagues from the Corporate Real Estate Business Support Unit and the external advisor community. Current commitments now exceed £150,000 and Grainger is proud to have contributed a Gold Sponsorship donation. Both charities are extremely grateful for all efforts, saying the amount raised will truly make a difference to their activities.
Matthew Norton, of the Maasai Heritage Foundation in the UK, added: "I have just spoken with my partner on the ground in Kenya. When I told her your target, she burst into tears. They struggle to understand why people who have never met them care - this is so touching and you will be making the world of a difference for several hundreds of people and their families through your efforts.”
The Maasai Heritage Preservation Foundation seeks to provide quality extensive education to children in Africa, with 100% of every £ donated going to its schools. While Save the Children helps disadvantaged children in the UK.
